ORIGIN Brussels sprouts are the quintessential Christmas dinner vegetable. In total there are about 110 different varieties of Brussels sprouts. They are native to the Mediterranean region along with other cabbage species. Brussels sprouts first appeared in northern Europe during the fifth century and were later cultivated in the 13th century near Brussels. From there they spread to the rest of the world. It is thought that the first farmed variety of Brussels sprout was cultivated in Ancient Rome.
